Two years older than me, Xavier Dolan is one of the most beautiful man in the world. Last night before saying my bedtime prayer, I suddenly (quickly and unexpectedly) realized we have a lot in common.
1)
We are almost the same age.
2)
I like most of his films and so does he.
3)
Dolan identifies as gay, so we are both fond of
men.
4)
The films that inspire us are almost one and the
same, “We’re talking about family entertainments from the 90s (Home Alone).” As
well as Batman Returns, chief among these is James Cameron's Titanic.
5)
He likes scrambled eggs and hates mushrooms .I
hate mushrooms.
6)
Jane Campion is our favorite.
7)
He has seen no Fassbinder movies, no John
Huston. So have I.
8)
He hasn't seen many Godard films. But we both
love "Pierrot Le Fou" .
9)
Dolan doesn’t get up every morning to write a
certain number of pages, as screenwriting books recommend. “But I do when I
have an idea…When I have an idea and it’s there, I’m excited. I don’t have to
try to sit down and work – I want to work! So I go into cafes and write all
day,” -
10)
And most importantly Xavier Dolan once wrote a
letter to Leonardo Di Caprio (I am not saying anything).
To fans, he’s the next Van Sant, Almodovar, or Wong Kar Wai;
to haters, he’s their pale imitation. His “Laurence Anyways” is one of my most
loved films. Maybe his films are not that great, maybe they are just aggressively
stylized. Maybe he is a queer icon and maybe age is just a number but I truly
love this man. Maybe I love him because he speaks in French or maybe because he
wants to express himself like Madonna.
He once said if it becomes too expensive, exorbitant and
rare to shoot on film_ a part of him as an artist would sort of die. He would
tell stories with a little less conviction.
We are almost the same age and I haven’t made a film half as
good as the making of his films.
